Nigerian music producer and entrepreneur Maje Ayida has courageously opened up about his personal struggles with depression following his highly publicized divorce from media personality Toke Makinwa. In a heartfelt interview with The Guardian Nigeria in June 2025, Ayida revealed how the emotional pain and societal stigma surrounding mental health led him to withdraw from public life for a significant period.

Ayida described the overwhelming feelings of shame and isolation that accompanied his depression, explaining that cultural perceptions in Nigeria often discourage men from openly discussing mental health challenges. “For a long time, I felt I had to suffer in silence because admitting vulnerability was seen as weakness,” he said.

He recounted how the breakdown of his marriage to Toke Makinwa, which ended in 2023, deeply affected his mental well-being. The couple’s separation was widely covered in the media, intensifying the pressure and scrutiny Ayida faced. “The divorce was a turning point. I realized I needed help but was hesitant to seek it initially,” he admitted.

Maje Ayida credited therapy, support from close friends, and a renewed focus on his music and business ventures for helping him navigate the dark period. He urged Nigerians, especially men, to prioritize mental health and break the stigma by speaking openly about their struggles.

His candidness has been widely praised by fans, mental health advocates, and fellow celebrities, who see his story as an important step toward normalizing conversations about depression and emotional wellness in Nigeria.

Ayida’s revelation also aligns with a growing movement within the Nigerian entertainment industry where public figures are increasingly using their platforms to raise awareness about mental health issues.
