Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has praised newly signed striker Viktor Gyokeres for significantly improving the team’s performance this season, calling him a crucial addition that has strengthened Arsenal’s attacking options. Speaking at a press conference following Arsenal’s recent Champions League victory, Arteta emphasized that Gyokeres’ presence has made the Gunners “a much better team.”
Gyokeres, who joined Arsenal from Sporting CP in July 2025 in a deal worth €63 million plus add-ons, has been a revelation at the Emirates Stadium. The Sweden international signed a five-year contract and quickly adapted to the Premier League. Known for his physicality, speed, and impressive goal-scoring record, Gyokeres scored 68 league goals in 66 games during his time in Portugal, including 39 goals in the previous season. Arteta noted, “Viktor brings a clinical edge and an intelligence in movement that threatens opposition defenses constantly.”
Before his stint in Portugal, Gyokeres also played in English football with spells at Swansea City, Brighton & Hove Albion, and Coventry City, where he developed a reputation for relentless work ethic and goal-poaching ability. Arsenal’s sporting director Andrea Berta highlighted Gyokeres’ qualities as “a perfect fit for our vision,” praising his physical attributes and winning mentality.
Arteta revealed that Gyokeres’ impact goes beyond scoring goals. “He’s a player who contributes defensively, presses well, and complements our style. Since he joined, the team’s attacking dynamic has transformed, and that’s reflected in our results.” Arsenal has enjoyed an impressive run of form this season, positioning themselves strongly in the Premier League and making history in the Champions League group stages.
Gyokeres has also earned praise from teammates for his professionalism and attitude in training. Forward and fellow striker Gabriel Martinelli said, “Viktor has brought intensity and confidence to our forward line. His hunger to improve every day inspires us.”
The Swedish international’s arrival has come at a critical time for Arsenal. The team had struggled with injuries to key forwards last season and needed a reliable number 9 to bolster their chances of ending a trophy drought since 2020. Gyokeres’ debut season promises to be pivotal as Arsenal push for silverware.
However, challenges remain, including sustaining his fitness, adapting fully to the physicality and pace of the Premier League, and maintaining goal-scoring consistency amid fierce competition. Analysts view Gyokeres’ signing as a strategic gamble with high rewards if he continues to meet expectations.
