A mass stabbing attack on a London North Eastern Railway (LNER) train traveling from Doncaster to London King’s Cross on November 1, 2025, has left the UK shaken. The attack, which occurred shortly after the train passed Peterborough in Cambridgeshire, resulted in 11 people being wounded, with nine sustaining life-threatening injuries. Two people were initially arrested in connection to the attack, but police have since confirmed that only one man remains a suspect.

The train made an emergency stop at Huntingdon station, where armed police swiftly arrested two men within eight minutes of the first 999 call. The main suspect, a 32-year-old Black British male from Peterborough, remains in custody on suspicion of attempted murder. The second man, aged 35, was released without charge after police confirmed he was not involved.

Authorities have ruled out links to terrorism and are treating the incident as an isolated attack. British Transport Police Deputy Chief Constable Stuart Cundy described the stabbing as a “horrific attack” with wide-ranging impacts, offering thoughts and support to the victims and their families. Prime Minister Keir Starmer condemned the attack as “deeply concerning” and “appalling,” highlighting the national shock and empathy for those affected.

Among the injured is a “heroic” member of the rail staff who tried to intervene during the attack and is still in a life-threatening condition. Five casualties have been discharged from hospital as of November 2, while two remain critically ill. Ten victims were treated at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge, a major trauma center.

Witnesses described chaotic scenes on the train, with passengers running through carriages, bloodied victims, and the attacker shouting “kill me” repeatedly before being tased and restrained by police. One passenger recounted hearing screaming and shouting before seeing a man running with a severe arm wound.

The investigation is ongoing with counter-terrorism police assisting in examining the circumstances and motivation behind the attack. A knife was recovered from the scene by armed officers.

This incident has raised concerns over passenger safety on UK trains and the bravery of railway staff in handling violent emergencies. The rail company and policing agencies are reviewing security protocols in the aftermath.
